How DARE you...

How dare you bring your screaming child into this store!!

I actually had the luxury of going into Wal-Mart for some fruit on Saturday morning without a toddler in tow. I love going to the store with my boy, but we all know how much easier a quick trip in and a quick trip out is without kids! I just wanted to share a story with you guys... and see what you think.

As I walk into Wal-Mart I turn left into the produce section... but even before I had walked into the doors I could hear it. I could hear the blood curling screaming of a child. As I turned to the apples I found the culprit. The little fella was screaming bloody murder because his 'mom' would not let him have more snack. Apparently she had opened the box of gummies and given him a pack and now he wanted more. Little boy would NOT stop screaming and throwing a fit. He was climbing into the shopping cart going over all of the food that mom had so neatly prepared and grabbing at the box. Mom would calmly take them away and he would continue yelling and screaming, kicking.. "Snack! Snack!" When I first heard the screaming I really expected to see a little dude around my boys age... but this little guy was probably at least 4. I kid you not that this fit lasted the whole time I was shopping in the produce... It seemed each place I went mom and her little guy were right there with me. Mom and her daughter just continued doing what they needed to do and time to time took the snack box away from the boy and said calmly, "I said no!" I was so amazed by this mom... For a few reasons which I will tell you about in a little bit. But what struck me were the other moms around us. The moms who casted judgement stares because this mom was allowing her child to throw this fit. Disgusted looks given to this child because he did not have self- control. Prideful smiles because "my child isn't acting like that." The moms who so rudely jerked their buggy the other direction as they talked to their friend about the child. I was not shocked or upset with the mom who had the crying son... or the son that was starting to give me a headache. I was upset with the other patrons in the store. It made me want to scream at them. But what happened to me next surprised me...

You see, at first I felt sorry for the mom because she was having to deal with this. Then I admired the mom for continuing her shopping and being so CALM. When my boy acts out in public, I start sweating, embarrassed and do everything but beg him to just stop. But as I looked at the grapes for the best ones and this little family stood about 15 feet from me, with the continued yelling... I started crying. I broke down right there looking at grapes. As the other moms starred at this woman in disbelief that she was allowing this, I cried. I cried because... we don't know her story. I have to admit to you that I LOVE when I think outside the box and I am not standing there like the other moms and judging. I love when I can remove the selfish part of me who wanted to relish the quiet, alone trip to Wal-Mart and I can realize that we have NO clue where this family has come from. There are so many scenarios.. but what made me cry was this.....

This "mom" could have very well been their mom, but she could have also been their Grandma. We have no clue. As we cast these stares and snide remarks to other moms in the grocery store, we have NO clue what is going on. I cried because I envisioned that she, like my own mother, is calm with these kids because they are her grand babies and she has been surprised by the new task of helping take care of them. You see, our mom is Gammy.. and Gammy now has to play such a vital role in our brothers kids lives. When Shane, our big brother, passed away in December of 2009, it was a shock and it shook our worlds... As he left three small children behind, our parents began to help support them. They have taken on such a huge task that I know they would not change. I cried because I could only imagine how our parents must have felt at times when the little ones would throw a fit in the store or restaurant and people gave them 'the look'... the look that says:

HOW DARE YOU BRING THAT SCREAMING CHILD OUT IN PUBLIC!

I cried because again, we do not know what the story is. I do imagine her story was much deeper than just allowing this small boy to scream and yell. But what about the boy? If this 'mom' was actually indeed new to taking care of this child... we have no clue what this little boy is going through.
I want to always think outside the box and not judge other moms. What gets to me the most about all of the stares, annoying looks, and snide remarks made to this mom was... HELLO! Have we not all experienced this at one time or another with our own child. Maybe not quite as bad for some-- but come on!! I want to always remember... kids will be kids.

I was mostly amazed by this 'mom' because she did not let it get to her. She didn't let it phase her that other moms were being so rude, she didn't get nervous and anxious, and she did not show any anger toward her child. The best part yet.. she did NOT give in to him.. she did NOT let him have another snack. She just let him throw his fit. I learned from her that day and today I wish I had said something to her. But I couldn't you see... because I was standing there.. looking at grapes.. crying.

What do you think? What do you do when your child throws a fit? Do you handle it right then and there or do you ignore it like this mom did? Are you a mom that cast those judgemental stares? Do you get annoyed seeing kids in stores throwing fits? Please share.

I have been thinking for sometime that I need to really invest in some sports glasses. The sunglasses that I wear when running are quite irritating to my head because they bounce all around and don't feel comfortable for a long period of time. I have seen several posts on other blogs about glasses that runners wear, but I am just a little too nervous to spend the money if I am not sure if I will like them.

Do you wear sports glasses when running? If so, will you let me know what kind?

In the past few years I have ordered my eye glasses online without going into a shop to have them adjusted or to try them on. Living overseas made this decision simple... I just had to do it. I have actually purchased from a couple of different websites and I have been pleased. So here I am again, not only in search of sports glasses, but new glasses frames as well. So, I figured I may as well buy them both at the same time.

Currently, I am looking at GlassesUSA.com at a couple of different pairs of eyeglasses and a pair of sports glasses. Have you ever ordered from this company? It seems to be a great company with their guarantees and refer a friend programs. These are the glasses I am looking at.. what do you think?

GlassesUSA.com also has this really cool virtual mirror where you can put different glasses on the person you create as yourself and see how they look. This is so fun to do ... go ahead and play around. You know you want to!

The really cool thing is that I have been looking for new glasses and sports glasses when GlassesUSA.com contacted us. We are so excited to share their newest glasses with you along with the awesome Virtual Mirror- but the best part is.. There are discounts in it for you. If you are interested in getting some new glasses, I highly recommend you take a look around their website and use the awesome codes they gave us to share with you for discounts.

Take 15% off your entire order amount + FREE shipping (orders over $50). Code: FS15
Take 10% off any order of prescription glasses. Code: Blog10

So which pair of glasses do you like best?
If you wear sunglasses to run in, what kind are they?

SPI Belt Review & Giveaway

We have been so excited to do this review since the day we found out that we were getting this amazing chance. SPI belt stands for Small Personal Item Belt. That makes sense, right? For runners this can be an essential piece of your running attire. Many times when attending a large race you have to have your id, keys, phone, etc. Where do you put that stuff? A lot of races have places where they can hold your stuff, but why not just take it with you? SP belt has so many awesome products including the belts you will see below, spibands, and even items for kids! Make sure you read what we, Big Sis and Lil' Sis, both thought of the Spibelt ... and see what is in it for YOU!

The belt on the left is Big Sis' and the belt on the right is Lil' Sis
(Yes, they come in cool colors too)

Big Sis' Review:
I have always seen runners wearing belts around their waists, but they always contained water bottles. They always seemed big and bulky and I never thought it would be something I could run with. I remember when I ran the Rock n' Roll 1/2 Marathon and I saw so many runners with these, I thought it was genius, but I knew it would bother me.

I was beyond excited when I opened the package and saw my little black belt! It was perfect. I was a bit worried about the pocket- but man, it holds so much! It is so small but stretches to meet your needs, which is perfect for any runner. I have worn it on several runs, but the run that it mattered the most was in a 5K that I did. I was able to wear it with my credit card, ID, keys, and money! AND... best part, I completely forgot the belt was on me. It did not irritate me at all. Actually I didn't even notice it was there! I did not feel/hear money jiggling nor did my keys bother me. I was also so excited when I realized that the belt had not moved at all.

The SPI belt could be used by anyone! It isn't just for running. It is a great asset to any athlete. It could be used for walking, bike, running, hiking, etc. My mom recently purchased one and she even mentioned using it on motorcycle rides...what a great idea?! There are always times when we miss the days of the ol' Fanny Pack, right??? ;) SPI belt is the answer! You can also put it under your shirt and no one will even know it was there! I recommend this item to anyone!

Lil' Sis' Review:
Now for my turn! I too have also been very excited to review the SPI Belt!
When I received the SPI Belt in the mail, I was first very excited to see how cute it was! Mine is a black belt with a turquoise pocket. I loved that it was handy and stylish. I was definitely excited to use it to run with. The first night I ran with my new SPI Belt I hit my highest mile goal so far of 6 miles.
I honestly did feel that the SPI Belt helped me achieve that goal.  The reason for that is because usually when I run with my Nike+ app I am constantly looking at my phone to see my current distance.  With my phone in my SPI Belt, I didn't look at it until mile 4, so I felt so good and just kept going.  It was great. Along with not looking at my phone, it helps just to have a place for it.  Plus the pocket is sleek and small so it isn't in the way or bothersome at all.

Another thing I like about the belt is the way it fits and how comfortable it is.
It is adjustable and so you can fit it to the size that you want.
When I first wore the belt I wondered if it would be annoying and move around a lot.  I was very surprised to find out that it stayed in place perfectly.  I didn't have to readjust the belt through my run at all, and that was great.  Because when you are running and tired you don't want to be worrying about adjusting a belt, so it is great that stays in place.
Also, it is just such a handy tool to have for any sport.  You can wear it for anything, running, biking, yoga, anything.  It is so handy to carry your phone, keys, credit cards/cash, any of those things that you may have to hold or carry with you.

All in all the SPI Belt is a great investment! I will suggest it to all of my friends from now on, and I will definitely continue to use it throughout my future runs and workouts.

I would like to add that each of us did our own review before putting them together. Many of our comments are actually the same, but they were totally done separately. That shows you how AWESOME of a product this it. If anyone has ANY questions, PLEASE ask us. We would be glad to try anything out with it or send pictures of certain parts if you are interested.

NOW FOR THE AWESOME GIVEAWAY!
The great thing about today is that not only do ya'll get to hear what we like about our SPI Belt, but you also get the opportunity to WIN your very own SPI Belt! No purchase necessary. We think it is awesome that the people over at SPI belt is going to give our reader a FREE SPI Belt too!

Homemade Pie Crust by Big Sis

We weren't raised in a home with a mom that cooked a lot... it's okay mom! Funny though that we both enjoy experimenting with new recipes and trying things out. I have really enjoyed, since becoming a stay at home mom, making our foods from scratch. However, in all this time making pie crust from scratch is not something I dared to try. I have had more than one person tell me on more than one occasion that pie crust is very difficult.... I dare to say it is not!

Google really is my best friend. I have a cabinet full of cookbooks, but I always go to google when wanting a recipe. This time it was not different. For some reason I went with the first recipe that popped up and man.. it was great. It was so easy and yummy. You can find the recipe that I used here

So, as the directions stated I had to cut my butter in small cubes and freeze them. I had never new that would make a difference. But it did. It was very interesting to me to find out that one of the secrets to getting flaky pie crust is to have really, really cold butter. So because of this they recommended freezing, which I did!

Of course I had my very own helper in the kitchen. He loves to cook with his Mommy. I was busy with my food processor when I hear "Mommy, Look at Me"... he is just too precious.

What you see below is me mixing the flour, butter, and water in my food processor. It was so neat to me how the small amount of water pulled the butter and flour together and created a crust. You have to really watch it because too little water won't give it the consistency it needs and too much water makes it much too tough... and you do not want that. I am so happy to have my food processor. It is so helpful when I need to bake! This was a wonderful gift from my in-laws a few Christmas' ago ... and it attaches to my Bosch... EVEN BETTER

Then I had to make disks with the dough, after dividing them into two. You can still see the butter pieces and that is OKAY! Remember, the butter is what helps your pie crust to be flakey.. so if you like flakey... this is your pie crust recipe to use.

A close up of the dough in the shape of a disk showing you that you can see the butter pieces!

Now you want to wrap your disks and put them in the fridge for at least an hour...

The picture below is so pretty to me. Once I pulled my disks out I was able to shape it how I needed it and put it in the pie dish. I was SHOCKED at how easy it was to manage the dough. I expected it to be hard and falling apart... not the case. It was the perfect consistency.

Do you have a great pie crust recipe that is relatively easy that you love? We would love for you to share it with us... and we would love to try it.

Please share.
